European Conference on Post Polio Syndrome

The European conference about Post Polio Syndrome was held in Copenhagen from August 31st to September 2nd, 2011. More than 300 persons participated from 25 countries.
Half of the participants were professional health care providers and half were polio survivors and their spouses/carers.
Leading researchers and health care providers presented the State of the Art management of polio problems in many oral presentations during the conference. Many researchers exhibited their latest research results with posters.
Several orthotic companies displayed their products and polio organizations from different countries shared their experiences and work.

Aims of the conference were:
After the great polio epidemics in the last century around 700,000 people in Europe are now suffering from late effects of polio. Many survivors have a decreasing functional level because of paralysis, fatigue and pain, and the European Polio Union wished with this conference:
- To give medical and social professionals a possibility to exchange new research results and to debate relevant topics on a professional level
- To give polio survivors a possibility to achieve and exchange new knowledge on assessment, treatment and coping
- To achieve awareness on polio issues in the health sector and social services
